Sample Curricula
This section includes sample training curricula on topics related to HIV/AIDS. These are presented as examples of how various organisations develop training materials for use in resource-limited settings. Some of the training materials are complete manuals and others are slide presentations. We are grateful to those organisations that provided their curricula for inclusion in this Training Toolkit.

Marcus McGilvray and Nicola Willis are HIV nurses from the UK who have embarked on numerous Africaid projects in Africa that help to provide ARV drugs, prevention education, and healthcare training. In 2004, they developed an easy-to-follow curriculum that focuses on information that will help nurses care for and treat their HIV-positive patients. The course is divided into seven sessions, and includes an excellent trainer’s manual and participant’s workbook.
These 2005 course materials were developed by the International Training and Education Center on HIV/AIDS (I-TECH), which is funded by the US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), for the Botswana Ministry of Health. It is used to help train Botswanan medical professionals in comprehensive STI care in primary healthcare settings. The eight modules cover patient-centred care, gathering information and assessing risk, the physical exam, diagnosis and management, integrating HIV testing into the primary-care visit, and risk-reduction and HIV post-test counseling.
The International Training and Education Center on HIV/AIDS (I-TECH) developed these course materials in 2005 with funding from the US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to train nurses at Tambaram Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine in Chennai, India in HIV/AIDS care and treatment. The ten units offer an overview of HIV/AIDS, opportunistic infections, antiretroviral care, importance of adherence, treating children, pregnancy and HIV, and the role of the nurse in HIV care and treatment.
Opportunistic Infections
In 2005 the International Training and Education Center on HIV (I-TECH) developed these course materials with funding from the US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to train physicians in the Tambaram Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine in Chennai, India to care for individuals with opportunistic infections. The curriculum contains seven modules, a participant handbook, and a facilitator’s guide, which focus upon identifying and treating opportunistic infections.
