Training Clinical Mentors
Mentoring is a challenging task that requires flexibility, skill in coordinating disparate stakeholders, excellent communication and relationship-building skills, and the ability to cope with rapid change of direction, in addition to up-to-date clinical knowledge and teaching skills. This section includes a 3-day generic curriculum on basic mentoring skills to ensure that clinical mentors are well prepared for their work. The curriculum can be adapted to meet specific needs and to fit within the local context.
Basics of Clinical Mentoring Curriculum
This 3-day generic curriculum on basic mentoring skills includes sessions on interpersonal communication skills, clinical teaching skills, and program orientation. Topics covered include starting a mentoring assignment, building rapport, giving feedback effectively, identifying teaching moments, teaching at the bedside, and strategies for addressing systems issues. The sessions include a variety of participatory exercises and activities designed to build confidence and skills in clinical teaching, as well as provide guidance on how to approach a mentoring assignment. This curriculum can be adapted for an individual country, or individual sessions can be broken out to address a specific training need.
