You Asked…We Answered! is a three booklet
series filled with questions asked by youth in Southern Africa
about their bodies, sex, love, and HIV/AIDS. These colorful booklets
provide direct and accurate information on sophisticated topics
through illustrations, cartoons, quizzes, and easy-to-follow text.
Each booklet includes contact information for organisations in
Southern Africa that can help answer further questions.
These booklets respect young people by talking plainly about HIV
and AIDS. Youth will be empowered by the detailed information
and suggestions for action. You Asked…We Answered!
is an excellent tool for peer educators, youth leaders, or anyone
that wants to challenge youth to be leaders in the fight against
HIV/AIDS.
- Booklet 1 – HIV and AIDS: Get the Facts! discusses
the basics of HIV and AIDS, such as what they are, how they
are transmitted. Also includes how STIs and TB are related
to HIV infection, and some common myths about HIV.
- Booklet 2 – HIV and AIDS: Let’s Talk About
Sex! explains the human reproductive system, contraception and pregnancy. The
booklet also covers love, reasons to consider abstinence, and
parent-to-child transmission.
- Booklet 3 – HIV and AIDS: How
Can I Make a Difference! is designed to help youth take action
against HIV/AIDS. Topics include learning your HIV status, stigma
and discrimination, and caring for people living with HIV and
AIDS. It also explains treatment, youth friendly services,
speaking out, and developing a project proposal.

You Asked...We Answered! Testimonial
“You Asked…We Answered” was based on questions from young people in Malawi, Lesotho, Mozambique, and Namibia. As a result, when the first copies of the books were finished, many youth organisations were anxiously waiting to receive the series! Youth organisations in Southern African countries use “You Asked…We Answered” as a resource to refer youth to, as well as a tool in workshops and meetings. An organisation in Zimbabwe placed “You Asked…We Answered” in primary and secondary schools to educate members of the community and school about HIV/AIDS. The books have also been passed out to people in the World AIDS Campaign and at the 2004 Bangkok International AIDS Conference. The books have become very popular as people realize the advantage of having such a friendly, straight forward text to use with young people.
