Description:
In 2003, an edition of Action:
The Environmental Health Magazine was dedicated to raising awareness of HIV and AIDS in young people. This edition includes a colourfully illustrated student handbook and teacher's guide. Used together, these tools increase knowledge and skills to avoid HIV infection. The tools also show how to live a healthy life with or without HIV/AIDS and support those living with HIV/AIDS. Although geared for early teens, lesson plans can easily be adapted to groups of different ages and knowledge levels.
In the Student Handbook young cartoon characters
learn about HIV/AIDS. Included are ways to avoid transmission,
HIV testing, and caring for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
Other topics include how to respond to pressure to have sex and
reasons to wait for sex. Young readers will be able to relate to
the stories. Each story includes factual information and role models
for positive behaviour.
The Teachers Pages offer lots of ideas and information
to supplement the comic book. Using the book, teachers can adapt
the course to schools, youth groups and communities. Directions
for role plays, group exercises and case studies are included.
There are also discussion questions, extra activities and tests
to measure students' knowledge levels. Ideas for research outside the classroom will help students learn to find information on their own.
