About this Behaviour Change Toolkit

What is this Toolkit?

This Behaviour Change (BC) Toolkit is a collection of resources that are designed to help people make healthier and safer relational and sexual choices. We call them "tools" because they can be used not only to educate people about HIV and AIDS, but also to help them make healthy choices that will build better lives for themselves and their families.

What tools are included in the BC Toolkit?

Eight tools are included in this Toolkit. Most of these tools were developed for use in Zimbabwe, but many can be used in other countries. Some of the tools are included in their entire form, while for others we provide excerpts. Information to enable you to get an original copy, when available, from the authoring organisation or publisher is included. Read a brief description of each tool below:

  • A Healthy Workforce - A Toolkit for HIV & AIDS Advocacy and Behaviour Change Communication in the Workplace**
A collection of behaviour change tools for the Zimbabwe workplace context. Created by the SmartWork Project, Center on AIDS & Community Health at the Academy for Educational Development (AED).
  • ABC – All the Questions We Never Dare to Ask*
An A to Z collection of questions and answers about sexuality, marriage, HIV and other sensitive topics. A collaborative effort published by Kwela Books and Weaver Press.
  • Action: AIDS – What can we do?**
An edition of Action, The Environmental Magazine devoted to HIV education and behaviour change in youth. Produced by the Action team.
  • AfricaPraying – A Handbook on HIV/AIDS Sensitive Sermon Guidelines and Liturgy*
A collection of numerous sermons and Bible verses that focus on reducing personal risk and increasing tolerance and acceptance of, and care for, people living with HIV/AIDS. Developed by the World Council of Churches.
  • Auntie Stella*
A collection of letters written by young people to a fictitious "auntie." Auntie Stella responds with thoughtful answers about pregnancy, HIV, sexuality, relationships and other important topics. Developed by Training and Research Support Centre (TARSC).
  • Mopani Junction*
A radio show focused on illustrating behaviour change for HIV prevention. Developed and funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and developed by CDC and Media for Development Trust.
  • Talk Time I**
A facilitator-led HIV/AIDS curriculum designed for small group discussions about behaviour change, specifically protection from HIV. Developed and funded by the CDC.
  • You Asked...We Answered**
A three-part booklet series created by the Southern Africa HIV/AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS) devoted to HIV education and behaviour change in youth.

    * An excerpt of the tool is included on this CD-ROM.
** The complete tool is included on this CD-ROM.

Who should use these tools?

The BC Toolkit was designed to be used primarily by those individuals in the "helping" professions, such as teachers, trainers, counsellors, ministers, workplace managers and community leaders. Parents can use it to help their children make smart choices that will keep them from contracting HIV. Friends and individuals may use it to obtain information. In short, these tools are designed to be used by anyone who wishes to influence others or change themselves to make healthier, safer choices regarding their relational and sexual behaviour.
